This Week in Canadian EdTech MindshareTV with Jacquelyn Sundberg, McGill University Library, Presenter at the Upcoming Serious Games Conference-- Sneak Peek Preso, 'Thinking Beyond the Stacks, Games in Special Collections'

Dear Thought Leader,

Happy Sunday! I hope you get an opportunity to get outdoors today to enjoy some of the awesome spring weather. As much as I love tech, I love to sail and rollerblade that get's me outdoors too! We know the benefits all too well and must model for our next generation. Of course, my wife reminded me last night of my apparent 'excessive' screen time!

As we eye the school year-end finish line with great anitcipation after an exceptionally long year, we can't let our guard down yet! In today's report there are two stories that relate to a cybersecurity attack on a Canadian school district, "I think it's a serious breach. There's no doubt about it," said Alec Couros, a professor of educational technology and media at the University of Regina (tweet of the week).  And a data privacy issue relating to students (#3), “How Dare They Peep into My Private Life?” We have a long way to go in addressing these two major EdTech topics. I will endeavour to podcast with cybersecurity and data privacy experts in the coming weeks to better inform our community across Canada.

Speaking of which I will be attending two significant professional learning conferences next month that will be addressing these matters (ECNO Summit) and ISTE22. Drop me a note if you plan to attend and would like to connect! We are also proud media partners of the International Society for Technology in Education Conference (ISTE22), hosting our 24th CanAm Celebration of Excellence Meetup at ISTE22 New Orleans. DM me to attend!

3. “How Dare They Peep into My Private Life?”
hrw.org, May 25, 2022
On school days, 9-year-old Rodin wakes up every morning at 8 a.m. in Istanbul, Turkey. He eats a bowl of chocolate cereal for breakfast; his mother reminds him, as she always does, to brush his teeth afterwards. By 9 a.m., he logs into class and waves hello to his teacher and to his classmates. He hopes that no one can tell that he’s a little sleepy, or that he’s behind on his homework.

During breaks between classes, Rodin reads chat messages from his classmates and idly doodles on the virtual whiteboard that his teacher leaves open. He watches his best friend draw a cat; he thinks his friend is much better at drawing than he is. Later in the afternoon, Rodin opens up a website to watch the nationally televised math class for that day. At the end of each day, he posts a picture of his homework to his teacher’s social media page.
